About FBI
Our Mission
At Freshwater Boardriders club, we strive to play our role in the community of fostering the growth and development of junior surfing, as well as providing a positive environment in which people of all ages can feel welcome and have fun.
With 50 years of history, Freshwater Boardriders has provided a vital stepping-stone for young surfers to develop their competitive surfing skills and gain invaluable experience that has allowed them to flourish in their junior surfing careers on a state, national and international level.
As we continue to grow as a club, last year we introduced our first ever female division with the support of 7x world champion Layne Beachley. This division has flourished and is now home to some of the area’s brightest up and coming female surfers, with results ranging from finals appearances in the Regional Titles to semi-final finishes in the Seas The Day Surf Festival.
With a growing membership base spanning Micro-groms (under 12’s girls and boys) all the way up to over 60’s, our goal is to continue to work with the community and support the development of surfing in Freshwater.

Junior Development Programs
Freshwater Boardriders Junior Development Program presented by Harbord Diggers
At Freshwater Boardriders, our club strongly supports junior surfers in developing their skills and passions in the sport of surfing. We provide a safe and encouraging environment for young surfers to hone their techniques, learn from experienced mentors, and build their confidence in the water. Through regular high performance coaching, regional and interstate competitions, and special events catered to juniors, we aim to foster growth and camaraderie among the next generation of surfers. Our commitment to nurturing young talent ensures that the future of surfing remains bright and exciting for all involved.
FBI Microgrom division
The Freshwater Boardriders Club's Micro Grom division is designed for the youngest and most enthusiastic surfers aged 12 and under. This division provides a safe and encouraging environment for these budding surfers to develop their skills and passion for the sport. Under the guidance of experienced instructors, the Micro Grom surfers have the opportunity to learn the basics of surfing, water safety, and beach etiquette through monthly club competitions and regular trainings. The division aims to foster a love for surfing from a young age, setting a solid foundation for these young athletes to grow and progress within the sport.
Female Development Programs
Freshwater Boardriders Club is committed to fostering the development of female surfers within the organization. With the invaluable guidance and mentorship from 7-time world champion Layne Beachley, our female members have access to world-class expertise and support in honing their surfing skills. Through targeted training sessions, competitions, and on-land coaching, the club aims to empower female surfers to reach their full potential and excel in the sport of surfing. This dedication to female development underscores Freshwater Boardriders' commitment to inclusivity and excellence in surfing. Since launching in 2023, the division has rapidly grown to include over 20 diverse and dedicated team members.
Past events included coaching and video analysis with Layne, surf skate sessions, joining Seas the Day (the largest all-female surf competition) and finishing 4th, a day trip to Urbnsurf, and more.
